Todo comienza cuando Kai Hansen y Piet Sielck forman una banda en 1978 llamada "Gentry". En 1981 cambiaron el nombre a "Second Hell" y reclutaron al baterista Ingo Schwichtenberg y al bajista Markus Grosskopf, quienes de hace tiempo estaban desempeñando una banda llamada Traumschiff. En 1982 Piet Sielck (quien más tarde fundaría Iron Savior), abandona Second Hell y la banda cambia su nombre a Iron Fist. En 1984 un sello independiente llamado Noise Records, invitaría a la banda para grabar dos temas para el nuevo Death Metal,una compilación hecha junto con otras bandas como Running Wild, Dark Avenger y Hellhammer. La banda no estaba satisfecha con la idea de llamarse Iron Fist y cambian el nombre a "Helloween". Ingo Schwichtenberg tuvo la idea de reemplazar la letra "o" por una calabaza, también elaborar obras con imágenes de calabazas, lo que se convertiría en una de las marcas más importantes del grupo. Helloween contribuyó a Death Metal con 2 temas, una versión lenta de Metal Invaders, la cual estaría después en el futuro álbum de Helloween Walls Of Jericho, y el tema Oernst Of Life.
En 1985 Helloween, ya con el nuevo guitarrista Michael Weikath, proveniente de la banda Powerfool, y que sustituiría a Piet Sielck, grabó en el estudio con el productor Harris Johns su debut, un mini-LP autotitulado que contenía 5 temas. El mini-LP tuvo muchísimo éxito, y las críticas eran buenas, consideraban bueno el trabajo de la banda para ser su debut.Durante este mismo año, el entonces cuarteto grabó y lanzó con Harris Johns nuevamente, su primer álbum, titulado "Walls of Jericho". Con estos trabajos, Helloween captó la atención de los medios de comunicación y recibió excelentes críticas.
Sin embargo, durante el siguiente tour, llegó a ser obvio que Hansen tenía dificultades para cantar y tocar la guitarra al mismo tiempo. La última aparición de Kai Hansen como cantante principal de la banda fue en 1986 con el single "Judas", que contenía la canción del mismo nombre y algunos temas en directo. Tras la dificultad de Hansen para tocar la guitarra y cantar a la vez, además de sus constantes problemas con su voz, surgió la idea de incluir a un quinto integrante. Entonces, Helloween empezó a buscar un nuevo cantante. Su primera opción era reclutar a Ralf Scheepers del grupo "Tyran Pace", sin embargo, ante su negativa, la banda terminó por reclutar a un joven de 18 años de una pequeña banda local conocida como "III Prophecy", Michael Kiske.Posteriormente se lanzó a la venta una compilación donde se unía el mini LP con el álbum Walls of Jericho.
